Rockefeller Brothers Fund
In 1976, while I was the head of the Environmental and Population Programs at the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, we received a proposal from an industry group wanting to pull together solutions to all the nations environmental problems and thereby end the distracting national debate over environmental issues that was slowing U.S. industrial expansion.
I had reservations about this proposal for many reasons, but focused on the need to develop first an environmental agenda so that the solutions industry proposed would address the issues environmental leaders thought were the key environmental issues.
After consultation with the large membership environmental and population groups, we decided to proceed with the project. It was then six months to the day until we had a book written, edited, printed, and were holding an all-day press conference in the Caucus Room of the U.S. House of Representatives. The book--The Unfinished Agenda: The Citizen's Policy Guide to Environmental Issues--was released just before President Jimmy Carter took office and was helpful in shaping environmental policy at the outset of Carter Administration.
Revised 22 June 2012.
